PPF and ceramic coating in the Saudi climate: heat, sand and sun

Last reviewed: · 2 min read

Saudi conditions are hard on car paint: high heat in summer, strong sun all year round, and dust and sand on the roads. Each of these has a direct effect on which protection you choose.

1. Sand and dust

Fine sand acts like sandpaper. On highways, especially between cities, the grains gradually blast the front of the car, leaving small chips and marks.

  • PPF is the best fit here, because its flexibility absorbs the impacts before they reach the paint.
  • Ceramic coating does not stop these impacts, but dust sticks less, so washing is easier.

2. Sun and UV

Strong sun fades paint over time, especially dark colours and cars parked in the open.

  • Ceramic coating reduces the effect of UV on the paint.
  • High-quality PPF is designed to resist yellowing. Cheaper films can yellow faster in the sun, so ask: does the warranty cover yellowing?

3. Heat and bird droppings

In high heat, bird droppings can leave a permanent mark on paint within a few hours, because their acidity reacts faster with a hot surface.

  • Any protective layer, film or coating, buys you extra time.
  • Rule of thumb: remove them as soon as possible with water and a soft towel, and never rub them off dry.

4. The upside of the heat

The self-healing property of many PPF films is activated by heat. Summer sun helps light surface scratches disappear on their own.

How long does protection last here?

It depends on the product and how the car is used:

  • A car parked in shade and used mostly in the city keeps its protection longer.
  • Frequent driving on desert roads and highways shortens the real lifespan.
  • As a general estimate: good PPF lasts 5 to 10 years, and ceramic coating 2 to 5 years.

Bottom line for Saudi conditions

If you drive a lot on highways: PPF on at least the front, with ceramic coating on the whole car to make dust easier to clean off. This combination is one of the most common choices in the region.
